Chesterfield is a market town, and the largest town in Derbyshire. You can climb up the Tower of the “Church of the Crooked Spire” to get a good view over the town centre. In the middle there is a collection of mediaeval streets known as “The Shambles”. At Chesterfield Museum you can discover the history of the town from Roman times until the industrial revolution. You can take a walk in Queen’s Park, which has cricket grounds and a boating lake as well as a leisure centre with a swimming pool. There’s also much to see in the surrounding area, for example Chatsworth House and Gardens, the home of the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire, and Bolsover Castle, which enjoys panoramic views over the Derbyshire countryside. Hardwick Hall, one of Britain’s most complete Elizabethan houses, is also nearby. |
