Situated on the southwest coast of Tenerife, just 15 minutes drive from the capital of Playa de Las Americas, Callao Salvaje is a delightful coastal village that draws significant numbers of visitors throughout the year.
Originally a small fishing village, the resort has undergone a dramatic transformation as part of the tourist boom experienced across Tenerife. Yet despite the proliferation of high-rise hotels and touristy bars, Callao Salvaje has managed to remain peaceful and relaxed. In a nutshell, Callao Salvaje is ideal for those who want to be near the action, but not in the middle of it.
The closest airport to Callao Salvaje is Tenerife South Airport, which is 26km away, and connects to a vast number of cities across Europe.
The most convenient way of travelling from the airport to Callao Salvaje is by making use of the public bus service TITSA which offers cheap and quick services. Alternatively, there are taxis and hire cars available from the airport.
Much like the rest of Tenerife, the climate in Callao Salvaje means it can be enjoyed at any time of year. The pleasant spring temperatures endure throughout the seasons, and all of the resort’s attractions stay open during the winter months as well, which is often one of the busiest times for Callao Salvaje. Indeed, the months of December to February are considered ‘peak season’ in Callao Salvaje.
Not quite so busy, but far from empty, are the months between May and October, when the cool sea breezes provide respite from the high temperatures which often climb above 30C.
In terms of the most economical time to visit Callao Salvaje, airfares come down from November to mid-December, and from March to May – the exception being the school holiday period at Easter.
Callao Salvaje is relatively limited in terms of attractions, and many visitors use the resort as a base from which to explore other parts of the island, including neighbouring resorts.
The beach in Callao Salvaje is small and extremely pebbly, and is mainly used by adults and watersports enthusiasts. For more child-friendly beaches, visitors can make the short trip to Playa de las Americas.
Also in Playa de las Americas is the Aquapark Octopus Tenerife, which offers fun for all the family in the shape of a large number of water slides, big swimming pools, diving boards and fabulous dolphin shows.
One area in which Callao Salvaje does excel is in its selection of good quality and reasonably priced restaurants. One of the very best is La Romantica, which is well known for its Spanish and International Cuisine, including fish and seafood, paella, flambés and roast suckling pig.
Another popular activity in Callao Salvaje is dolphin spotting, with half-day boat trips available, offering the chance to see playful dolphins and whales swimming alongside your boat.
For golf enthusiasts, the resort is within easy reach of the Costa Adeje Golf resort, which offers a top-quality golfing environment as well as spectacular views of the sea and mountains.
A popular excursion from Callao Salvaje is Loro Parque, located in Puerto de la Cruz in the north of the island. This animal park includes a myriad of creatures including dolphins, whales, sea lions, parrots and penguins. Journey time by coach from Callao Salvaje is around 2 hours.
