The hotel is situated in a grade II listed building which is evident from its historic charm and appearance particularly its ornately detailed façade. The George became a hotel in 1881 having been converted from three other buildings, but its history started more than 100 years before then; it was built in 1775 at the height of the Scottish capital?s new town boom. It was also formerly known as the Intercontinental Hotel before being transformed under a different brand.

The George Hotel has recently benefitted from the addition of 50 rooms bringing the total to 250 rooms and suites, a figure which includes a variety of different types of room. There are standard rooms, superior rooms, deluxe rooms, superior deluxe rooms and suites to choose from, each offering different levels of luxury and space. Some of the rooms have views which look out at the city while each room has top class amenities and is modern in design and furnishing. The rooms are aubergine and taupe in color and come complete with a whole host of facilities to help you relax during your stay. The rooms at the George Hotel are equipped with plasma screen television, internet access, hairdryer, work desk, tea and coffee making facilities, safe (ideal for laptops), iron and ironing board, Voicemail.

The hotel offers a variety of cuisine; a wonderful buffet style restaurant to the rear of a lobby, in what can only be described as a quite stunning luxurious setting. The Tempus bar and restaurant serves modern Scottish dishes like Buccleugh beef and Loch Fyne oysters. It features pre-Raphaelite-style paintings, wooden floors and soft lighting. The adjoining bar offers cocktails and champagne. Le Chambertin is a split-level restaurant serving Scottish meals, and a range of single malt whiskies in the oak-panelled bar.

The George Hotel is a Grade II-listed building located on George Street in the central shopping area of Edinburgh, Scotland. George Street runs parallel to Princes Street, the city's main shopping area, close to department stores like Harvey Nichols. The National Gallery and National Portrait Gallery are 500 metres from the hotel, while Edinburgh Castle and the Royal Mile are within a mile.
