The rich history of the hotel started on its location when G.A. Heineken opened his first Heineken brewery between 1864 and 1870. Due to the city council filling in the canal in front of the building in the name of modernisation, he moved to the present location on the Stadhouderskade. The Hulscher brothers continued the business and on 5 September 1870 a unique beer house, called Die Port van Cleve, opened its doors. It did not take long for it to evolve from a beer house into restaurant with the De Poort brasserie serving typical Dutch dishes and what were to become the famous numbered steaks. Since 1870 these steaks have been served and in 1997 the magic number of 6,000,000 numbered and certificated steaks was reached. Evolving from a beer house to a Dutch steakhouse, it was not long until the first rooms made the building the Die Port van Cleve hotel. The name Die Port van Cleve comes from a memorial stone with the inscription ‘Die Port van Cleve’ which was found during the takeover by the Hulscher brothers. Some unchanged features include the unique frontage, which has listed building status, and also the unique interior of De Blauwe Parade bar-bodega. The Delft blue tiles in the Bodega date back to 1887.

Just recently we have finished the complete renovation of our hotel behind the monumental historic facade and brought it to the requirements of modern travellers. Located in the centre of Amsterdam, next to the Magna Plaza shopping centre which used to be the old post office, this hotel is perfectly located to see all the main tourist attractions of Amsterdam. It is also within walking distance of central station.

The bedrooms have recently been renovated. All rooms are mainly medium in size and those overlooking the main street are well insulated. As this is an old building, room sizes do tend to vary.

This is located on the ground floor and is very popular with hotel guests and tourists. It serves traditional Dutch cuisine and is renowned for its steaks.

The lobby is small with a small seating area but it is quite welcoming as it has recently been renovated.

It is a traditional building consisting of numerous old townhouses.

From Schiphol Airport take Handelskade for 30 yards before turning right onto Herbergierstraat and after 100 yards on this road take a left onto Retourbaan. Take a left onto Slingerweg and after 1.5 miles head towards Utrecht, Haarlem and Amsterdam via the A4/E19. Comtinue along this road until the exit for Ring Amsterdam West, Andere afritten, Centrum, Zaanstad, Leeuwarden and A10 West. Take the A10 for approximately a mile and then take Einsteinweg/A10/E22 for 2.5 miles. Exit towards Exit s103, Exit s104, Bos en Lommer, Westerpark and Haarlem. Take a right onto S103 for 2.5 miles and continue along Prins Hendrikkade for 250 yards. Take a right onto Martelaarsgracht for 90 yards than take a final left onto Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal and the hotel can be found on this road.
