The vast majority of Durban hotels are located along the Golden Mile, a 6km strip along the beachfront. Here you can find mostly mid-to high-end accommodation, including the 3-star Suncoast Hotel, and the 4-star Balmoral Hotel, both of which offer stunning views of the Indian Ocean.
Arguably the best and most famous hotel in Durban that is located away from the Golden mile is the 5-star Royal Hotel, which is a major Durban landmark, situated in the historic city centre.
Durban boasts some delightful suburbs such as Berea, Durban North and Kloof, which offer a calmer atmosphere than the central district, whilst still being within easy reach of its attractions such as the Golden Mile. Located in Durban North is the 4-star Royal Palm Hotel, directly opposite the Gateway Theatre of Shopping on the picturesque Palm Boulevard.
Many visitors to Durban choose to stay in Umhlanga, located just north of the city. This up-market area offers plenty of good accommodation, excellent beaches, fine walks and bird-life around the lagoon. A good mid-range choice here would be the 3-star Protea Umhlanga Ridge, which overlooks the pretty Chris Saunders Park.
