Calais is divided into two distinct areas and descriptions of both may help you choose your Calais hotel. The old part of the town, Calais proper (or Calais-Nord), is situated on an artificial island surrounded by canals and harbours. The modern part of the town, St-Pierre, lies to the south and southeast.
Many of the hotels in Calais cater for the English tourists visiting the hypermarkets to pick up cheap alcohol. But whilst most tend to stay in one of the budget Calais hotels, there are also a number of higher-end accommodation options.
The majority of the hotels in Calais are located in the western half of the old town. Some of the accommodation in this area, such as the Holiday Inn, offer harbour views.
For back street calm, you could try a hotel along the rue Edmond Roche, which is located in the centre of Calais, but tucked away from the hustle and bustle. If you want to stay in a more vibrant part of town, you should try one of the hotels on the busy Rue Royale, to the west of the town centre, which is close to a casino and other entertainment venues.
