Basel has plenty of accommodation, ranging from the budget to the luxury – though ‘budget’ in Switzerland can equate to ‘expensive’ elsewhere! Most of the chain hotel brands are represented in Basel, although there are a number of cosier, independently-run establishments too.
Most of the main attractions are located in the compact old town, around the impressive Marktplatz, and if being in the heart of the action is a priority, you should look for a Basel hotel in this area.
The district of Grossbasel is on the south bank of the Rhine and is dotted with historic gems. Basel hotels here can vary in price and luxury, but if you can stretch to it, the 5-star Grand Hotel Les Trois Rois would make for a fine choice. This is one of the oldest and most elegant hotels in the city and has had such distinguished guests as Napolean and Queen Elizabeth II.
A more moderately priced hotel in Basel is the 2-star Rochat, which is located in a quiet section of the Old Town and has received excellent guest reviews on tripadvisor.com.
The largely residential area of Kleinbasel has a number of fine hotels. The modern and spacious Swissôtel Le Plaza Basel is a superb 5-star Basel accommodation option, particularly for business travellers. It is located in the Messe trade fair complex, 1km from the Old Town, and is connected to the city's major convention centre. Those looking for a cheaper Basel hotel reservation will also find the 4-star Mercure Europe hotel in this area.
St Alban is an attractive district, and is home to some of Basel’s most deluxe hotels. The luxurious Hotel Victoria Basel and Hotel Euler Basel are a couple of high-end choices, while the small but quaint 3-star Hotel Helvetia will suit those looking for a mid-range option.
