Staying anywhere central in Amsterdam will give you easy access to all of the city’s main tourist sights, as well as Central Station, the city’s main transport hub. More important to you may well be the quality of the immediate area around your hotel, and in this regard accommodation in Amsterdam can vary.
For a grand setting, you should try one of the numerous hotels around Dam Square, one of the most visited tourist areas in Amsterdam, and close to the impressive Royal Palace. This area is located a 10-15 minute walk south east of Central Station.
For a taste of the high-life, the Amstel Inter Continental is situated in the very heart of the city, a 20-25-minute walk south of Central Station. Film stars and royalty have been known to stay in this luxurious hotel in Amsterdam, which is very well located, near to theatres, museums, restaurants and clubs.
A cosier and more quaint part of Amsterdam is around Leidseplein square, east of the city centre, which really comes to life in summertime. This is also a good part of town for clubbing and coffee shops.
Alternative parts of the city to find an Amsterdam hotel are the Museumkwartier area, close to many of Amsterdam’s major museums, or the Red Light distinct, which is a perfectly safe place to stay despite its insalubrious reputation.
