Ever wondered what an ancient hotel was like? Well now, thanks to the wonderfully preserved Pompeii, you don’t have to wonder any longer. Just outside of the ancient Roman city of Pompeii, a 5 star hotel has been discovered. The site was uncovered during the widening of a major roadway connecting Naples to southern Italy. During 2007, excavation has revealed five private dining rooms complete with couches for feasting upon, small fountains in the center of each room and superb works of art adorning the walls. A 4 meter kitchen with long countertops has also been unearthed at the site. Huge slabs of marble were also found which leads archeologists to believe that the hotel was still under construction at the time of the eruption. It is also thought that the inn was used mainly by wealthy businessmen from other lands who were in Pompeii for wheeling and dealing.

Although tragic, the eruption of mount Vesuvius in August 79AD, has left many of the ash covered remains of Pompeii greatly preserved which helps archeologists uncover the mysteries of this olden city – including the remains of this ancient hotel. The remains of the dining areas will be reconstructed in museums once the excavation is complete.
