Shannon Airport (sometimes referred to as Shannon International Airport) is one of Ireland's three primary international airports. It is located 15.5 miles west Limerick City in Shannon, County Clare. Since the dawn of transatlantic flights, the airport has traditionally been an important gateway between Europe and the Americas. The airports prominence on the transatlantic route has declined over the years but it still offers regular scheduled services to destinations in the US, as well as becoming an important European hub for Irish low-cost airline Ryanair. The airport handled 3.1 million passengers in 2008, making it the 3rd busiest airport in Ireland that year. The only Irish airports to see higher passenger numbers in 2008 were Dublin and Cork (in descending order respectively).
