Leonardo da Vinci-Fiumicino Airport (sometimes referred to as Fiumicino Airport or Leonardo da Vinci International Airport) is one of two airports serving the city of Rome. It is located 21.5 miles west-southwest of central Rome, on the outskirts of Fiumicino, the coastal fishing town from which the airport takes its name. Leonardo da Vinci-Fiumicino Airport handled 32.95 million passengers in 2007, which made it Italy's busiest airport and the 8th busiest airport in Europe that year. Rome Ciampino, the second airport serving the Italian capital, handled 5.4 million passengers in the same period of time. Along with Milan Malpensa Airport, Leonardo da Vinci-Fiumicino Airport is a major international travel hub and an important gateway to the Italian Peninsular. Numerous scheduled and charter airlines offer flights from the airport to domestic and international destinations across Europe, Africa, the Middle East, North America, South America, Asia and the Indian Ocean.
