Malpensa International Airport (also referred to as Milan Malpensa International Airport, or just simply Malpensa Airport) is the second busiest commercial airport in Italy and one of three airports serving the city of Milan and the surrounding region. The airport is located 31 miles northwest of the city centre, in the province of Varese, Lombardy. The airport served 23.9 million passengers in 2007, which made it the 12th busiest in Europe that year. The only Italian airport to serve more passengers in 2007 was Leonardo da Vinci-Fiumicino Airport, which serves the city of Rome. Malpensa International Airport is an important hub for international air travel. It provides services from Milan to short-haul and long-haul destinations across Italy, Europe, North and South America, Asia, Africa, the Caribbean and the Middle East. The airport is also a major cargo terminal and is currently Italy's busiest airfreight hub.
