Melbourne Airport is Australia's second busiest airport. It is one of four airports serving the city of Melbourne and currently the only one offering international services. The airport is located 14 miles northwest of central Melbourne, next to the suburb of Tullamarine, after which the airport was initially named. The Melbourne to Sydney air route, which the airport serves, is the fourth busiest air route in the world; around 850 aircraft make the journey every week. Due to the geography of Australia, air travel is a popular means of transport and Melbourne Airport is a major centre of domestic travel. The airport served 24.26 million passengers in 2007-08, of which 19.36 million were domestic travellers. The remaining passengers were international travellers flying between Melbourne and destinations throughout Asia, Oceania, North America, Europe and the Middle East.
