London Gatwick Airport recently celebrated in 50th anniversary. Queen Elizabeth II officially opened the airport in 1958 although an airfield had stood on the site since about 1930. Passenger numbers exceeded 35 million in 2007, making Gatwick the 7th busiest international airport in the world and 2nd busiest in the UK behind London Heathrow. The airport has traditionally been a base for charter flights and transatlantic services serving London and the southeast of England. The recent Open Skies Agreement between the EU and US has seen a reduction these transatlantic services after a number of airlines pulled out of Gatwick, leading to a slight shift in focus to European services. Currently around 70 carries offer scheduled and charter flights from London Gatwick Airport to over 200 domestic and international destinations. There are two terminals at the airport as well as a conference and business centre. A five-year £874 million investment had been planned by the airports owners but at present, this looks unlikely to go ahead.
Gatwick has the modern facilities expected of such an important international transport hub.
