London City Airport is a single runway airport serving the financial districts of the UK capital, London. The airport was opened in 1987 on former dockland 7 miles east of the City of London in the Borough of Newham. Due to the airports location in a built-up area and the shortness of its runway, it is best served by STOL (Short Take Off and Landing) aircraft. Over 3.25 million passengers travelled via the airport in 2008, which made it the 15th busiest in the UK and the 5th busiest serving the London area. It is an important hub for corporate travel and at present has 10 airlines flying to major business and financial centre across the UK and Europe. The airport will begin a transatlantic service to New York in September 2009.
