Liverpool John Lennon Airport is one of Europe's fastest growing airports. Between 1997 and 2007 the number of passengers passing through the airport terminal rose from 0.69 million to nearly 5.5 million. It was the UK's 12th busiest airport in 2007 and second only to Manchester for the northeast of England. The airport is a major hub for low-cost scheduled flights to short-break and holiday destinations across Europe. Liverpool John Lennon Airport is located about 7.5 miles southeast of central Liverpool in the Speke area of the city, close to the Mersey Estuary. The airport was given its current name in 2002 to honour local hero, John Lennon, one of the founding members of The Beatles. A £37 million development project is currently underway at the airport that will see the creation of multi-storey car park and Liverpool Airport hotel. The hotel at Liverpool Airport, which will be connected to the terminal via a covered walkway, is expected to open in summer 2009.
