Ataturk International Airport is one of two international airports serving the city of Istanbul, Turkey. It is situation on the European side of the city, 9 miles from the centre, in the district of Bakirkoy. The airport is named after Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, the founder and first president of the modern Turkish Republic. It is the main international gateway to Turkey and an important hub for domestic air travel. It handled 25.56 million passengers in 2007, making it by far the busiest airport in Turkey the 11th busiest European airport that year. Of these 25.56 million passengers, around 41% were domestic customers travelling between Istanbul and internal destinations such as Ankara, Bodrum and Izmir.
