East Midlands Airport is an international airport serving the cities of Derby, Leicester, Nottingham and the surrounding area. It is near the village of Castle Donington in Leicestershire, 8 miles southeast of Derby. The airport handled just over 5.6 million passengers in 2008, making it the 10th busiest airport in the UK and busiest in the East Midlands that year. It is also an important freight airport; in fact, it is currently the 2nd largest in the UK, only London Heathrow handles more. The arrival of low-cost airlines in 2002 signaled an increase in passenger numbers at East Midlands Airport. Services at the airport continued to grow over the following years and the airport is now an important hub for easyjet, bmibaby and Ryanair.
