Barcelona International Airport is an important European air hub serving the city of Barcelona. It is located in the Baix Llobregat municipality of El Prat de Llobregat, 6 miles southwest of Barcelona city centre. The airport is the largest in Catalonia and the second busiest in Spain. It served 32.8 million passengers in 2007, which made it the 9th busiest airport in Europe that year. Madrid Barajas International Airport, the busiest in Spain, handled 52.12 million passengers the same year. The world's busiest air route, the Barcelona-Madrid air shuttle, runs daily between the two cities. At its peak in 2007, the service was running 971 times a week. Services to domestic, European and North Africa destinations account for the bulk of passenger flights at Barcelona International Airport.
