It is located 12 east of the Greek capital, near the Attican town of Spata. In terms of passenger numbers it is nations busiest airport and an important domestic and international air hub. Athens International Airport offers scheduled and charter flights to domestic and international locations across Europe, North America, Africa and Asia. Because of its location close to the edge of Europe, the airport acts as a gateway airport for European nations to the Middle East. In 2007, Athens International airport served 16.52 million passengers, which made it the 25th busiest airport in Europe. Olympic Airlines and Aegean Airlines, the two largest airlines in Greece, both have their main operating base and primary hub at Athens.
